The SQL Server 2016 Essential Guide: The Modern Data Platform

Image
Microsoft is getting ready to bring out the new SQL Server 2016 release and like every major release SQL Server 2016 introduces a lot of new features as well as a lot of enhancements to existing features. In this column I'll give you an essential guide to all the major enhancements in the SQL Server 2016 release. SQL Server has come a long way since it was originally released 27 years ago. Back in the early days of SQL Server 6.0/6.5 SQL Server was considered a departmental database that wasn't able to handle enterprise workloads. That all changed when Microsoft released SQL Server 7.0 back in 1998. With the SQL Server 7.0 release Microsoft rearchitected the relational database engine and added in the OLP Services and Data Transformation Services (DTS) laying the foundation for the data platform of today. With SQL Server 2000 Microsoft added XML support and improved scalability. SQL Server 2005 added SQL Server Management Studio and Database Mirroring. Plus, DTS was replaced ...

5 Reasons to have a Dedicated Server for Minecraft

Image
Minecraft is a simple looking game with the most interesting things to offer. Someone who has played this game once knows how short nights and days can be while being indulged into the world of Minecraft. This particular game offers a sandbox (open world) space to its gamers, where each player has the freedom of exploring wherever they desire and create whatever they want. Minecraft is a pioneering game in the Sandbox games category. Its unique selling proposition is the freedom of following or not at all caring for missions offered within the game. This means that you can have like a secondary life in the world of Minecraft including of course the ability to create or connect with communities and play together. Gamers would know that Minecraft requires a server to run, just like other server-based games. The multiplicity of the game is determined by the number of slots that are installed for your particular world. This means that more slots (one slot is each gamer) allow more to ...

Data Breaches: Moving Security Perimeter Back to Server Level

Image
Thought you might find this interesting Editor's Note:   Jon Senger is the CTO of Vertiscale . He writes frequently on the on the topic of HIPAA compliance and the role of MSPs in healthcare security. The leading cause of data breach incidents in healthcare facilities is lost or stolen end-user devices, including laptops and tablets. Such breaches have led to six figure fines for HIPAA violations in some cases, and with the stepped up enforcement coming in 2016 promised by the Department of Health and Human Services, we can expect to see more healthcare providers receiving similar fines. The best way to ensure security of applications and data is by pulling the security perimeter back to the data-center, keeping data off of end user devices. The resulting security landscape is much easier to manage and audit than a traditional distributed device scenario. By implementing a system that optimizes employee productivity and enables secure remote ac...

Getting Started with Temporal Table in SQL Server 2016 – Part 2

Image
Introduction SQL Server 2016 introduces the temporal table (also known as 'system-versioned' temporal table) feature to store history of data changes in a table so that you can travel back in time and get the data that represents a past state in time. In the last article of the series, I discussed this new feature, how it works, considerations and limitations to keep in mind when using this new feature. In this article I am going to demonstrate creating a new table with this feature or modifing an existing table to enable this feature, querying data from temporal table or system-versioned table with newly introduced query constructs, schema modification consideration, meta-data queries, etc. Temporal Table – Creating a New Table with this Feature A temporal table must have a primary key defined in order to correlate records between the current table and the history table, whereas a history table cannot have constraints like primary key, foreign key, table or column cons...

DWS Admits Clinton's Use of Email Server Was Unprecedented

Image
In an interview with Fox News Sunday, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz actually admitted that Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server was unprecedented. Before conceding this point, Wasserman Schultz argued that Clinton is probably the most transparent presidential candidate ever given that she's released 55,000 pages of emails available for anyone to look through. "She was doing something, and using private email in the same way that previous secretaries of state have done," she said, before host Chris Wallace pushed back saying, "You know that's not true." "Other than the private server," she acknowledged. "Other than the private server's a big deal," Wallace noted, "and nobody had 30,000 work emails on their private server or private email, period. So the comparisons to Colin Powell, that's just not true, congresswoman." [embedded content] Last week, FBI Director James Comey said the agency h...

Millions of unpatched JBoss servers open to abuse

The firm's Talos security team has investigated SamSam infections among clients and now estimates that 3.2 million servers running JBoss are at risk of infection by the ransomware due to poor patching practices. Cisco Systems' Talos security unit reckons that this could cause of a lot of people a lot of trouble. "This led us to approximately 3.2 million at-risk machines". The research found 2,100 backdoors installed across almost 1,600 IP addresses; backdoors that can allow the introduction of malware code. From the brief look at the compromised servers, Cisco says that they belong to schools, governments, aviation companies, and more. Some third-party apps require older JBoss builds, and one such piece of software - Follett Learning's Destiny library management software used in U.S. schools - is getting hit. Cisco Talos notified Follett, which explained a patching system that patches systems from version 9.0-13.25 and captures any non-Destiny files on the...

Outdated Apps Put 3.2M Servers at Risk for Ransomware

Image
Besides the files specific to previous SamSam ransomware infections, researchers say they've also found the presence of other well-known backdoors, such as "mela", "shellinvoker", "jbossinvoker", "zecmd", "cmd", "genesis", "sh3ll" and possibly "Inovkermngrt" and "jbot". The Cisco team thereby suggests that a compromised host should be taken down immediately as this host could be abused. Cisco Talos has realized there is more than one webshell on compromised JBoss servers and that it is critical to review the jobs status page contents. "We found just over 2,100 backdoors installed across almost 1600 IP addresses". "Ideally, you would also re-image the system and install updated versions of the software". Red Hat renamed the JBoss Application Server as WildFly back in 2014. Admins who discover webshells on their servers should first remove external access to the serve...

Wasserman Schultz: Hillary emailed like other Secretaries of State (except for the private server part)

Another Dem talking point goes up in flames In an appearance on FOX News Sunday today, DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schulz dismissed Hillary Clinton's email scandal and the ongoing FBI investigation as a non-issue. Host Chris Wallace called her out for innacurate comparisons to other officials. The Washington Free Beacon reports: Schultz: Clinton Used Private Email The Same Way as Previous Secretaries of State … 'Other Than the Private Server' Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.) stumbled while trying to defend Hillary Clinton's private email troubles on Fox News Sunday, claiming Clinton used a private email the same way as previous secretaries of state "other than the private server." She also added the scandal was "ludicrous" but claimed she didn't want to comment on it… Fox host Chris Wallace closed his interview with her by asking about her prior dismissal of the email allegations against...
