Microsoft will make SQL Server 2016 generally available on June 1

All four versions of SQL Server 2016 will be available on that date. The latter edition includes the full feature set of the Enterprise Edition, and will be freely available for development and test use, but not for use in production settings.

Another marquee feature is the new Always Encrypted function, which makes it possible for users to encrypt data at the column level both at rest and in memory.

Database fans, start your clocks: Microsoft announced Monday that its new version of SQL Server will be out of beta and ready for commercial release on June 1. "With this new release, Microsoft is delivering an end-to-end data management and business analytics solution with mission critical intelligence for your most demanding applications as well as insights on your data on any device".

One of its new features, Always Encrypted, is a new security capability created to protect active and resting data without affecting database performance.

Microsoft has announced that SQL Server 2016 for Windows will go into general availability on June 1 and is positioning it against Oracle on cost, security, and speed. It also aims to cut storage costs and simplify IT operations. This keeps more of your historical data at your fingertips by transparently and securely stretching warm and cold OLTP data to Microsoft Azure on-demand without application changes.

The company also pointed to a newly released benchmark from Lenovo today that showcased SQL Server 2016 Enterprise running on the company's Lenovo System x2950 X6 rack server. You can also manage all of your KPIs, mobile reports and traditional reports from a modern web portal.

SQL Server 2016 owns the top TPC-E performance benchmarks for transaction processing, the top TPC-H performance benchmarks for data warehousing, and the top performance benchmarks with leading business applications like PROS and KPMG.

SQL Server 2016 comes with a suite of new features over its predecessor, including a new Stretch Database function that allows users to store some of their data in a database on-premises and send infrequently used data to Microsoft's Azure cloud. This result, in addition to recent benchmarks by software and hardware partners, as well as key applications across variety of workloads, proves that SQL Server 2016 is the fastest in-memory database on the planet for your applications.
