SQL Server 2016 To Hit General Availability in June

SQL Server 2016 will be released in Enterprise, Standard, Express, and Developer SKUs. In March, we announced that the SQL Server 2016 Developer edition will be a free download to enable broad access to and development on the full capabilities of the latest SQL Server release.

The company said by upgrading to SQL Server 2016, users can expect up to 7x faster throughput, 34x faster queries and 3.6x faster reporting.

On the security side, SQL Server 2016 will come with Microsoft's new Always Encrypted feature, which analyzes data without decrypting it using homomorphic encryption.

Speeds and feeds: The new database can scale to 12 TB of memory and 640 logical processors, perform transactions 30 times faster than the prior iteration and return queries 100 times more quickly, run operation analytics against transactional data and better balance loads, according to Microsoft.

Applications requiring the highest levels of security with new Always Encrypted technology that protects your data at rest and in motion without impacting database performance.

Microsoft has confirmed it will make the final version of its SQL Server 2016 software generally available on June 1, 2016. This keeps more of your historical data at your fingertips by transparently and securely stretching warm and cold OLTP data to Microsoft Azure on-demand without application changes.

Another new feature called Stretch Database is essentially a hybrid cloud solution.

In a bid against rival Oracle, Microsoft is also giving away free support for customers who switch to SQL Server 2016 from Oracle before the end of May.

On the analytics, big data and business intelligence front, Microsoft added new capabilities for creating visual reports with new chart types, tools for turning complex information sets into trusted data models, and multidimensional models within SQL Server Analysis Services.

Enterprise scale data warehousing with enhanced in-memory columnstore that increases query performance by over 100x vs disk based solutions.

The company also pointed to a newly released benchmark from Lenovo today that showcased SQL Server 2016 Enterprise running on the company's Lenovo System x2950 X6 rack server. It also contains an end-to-end mobile business intelligence product, and offers users the ability to manage data on any device. You can also manage all of your KPIs, mobile reports and traditional reports from a modern web portal.
